The craft of Pen Kalamkari involves the use of a bamboo reed and a liquid ink made from fermented jaggery and rust iron chips, and artisans sketch designs incorporating all themes and styles. Once the liquid ink is used on the cloth processed with full fat milk, Indian Hog Plum and Alum – it turns into a black permanent indelible ink.

Once the design is completed, a separate set of artisans engage in the process of colouring. Natural colors (made from Indian Hog Plum flowers, Pomegranate peels, some stems, roots and stones of specific features) and pigment colors are processed for over 15 days before usage on the fabric.

Comprising of almost 17-19 steps and a total maximum duration of 21 days per fabric completion – each unit brings together 100-150 artisans to create the magic.

A true work of art – it’s a absolute privilege to watch, learn own and adorn some Pen Kalamkari craftsmanship.

The dupattas/scarves are in a silk fabric. Please note, there may be a 10-15% variations in the colors from the pictures. The designs may also have some minor inconsistencies as they are hand done. Each piece is one of a kind and no two pieces are alike.
